What Ikigai Actually Is
A Japanese concept meaning reason for being. It sits at the center of four overlapping circles: what you love, what you're good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for. The magic is in the overlap of all four.
Why Three Out of Four Will Break You
- Love it, good at it, world needs it — but nobody pays: the nonprofit trap.
- Good at it, world needs it, can be paid — but you don't love it: burnout on a schedule.
- Love it, world needs it, can be paid — but you're not good at it yet: fixable, skill is acquirable.
- Love it, good at it, can be paid — but world doesn't need it: a hobby that generates income until it doesn't.
How to Work Through It
What do you love? When did you last lose track of time? What are you genuinely good at? Look at the pattern of your life, not your resume. What does the world need? Look for frustration and unmet demand. What will people pay for? Look for evidence of existing transactions.
The Life Part Matters Too
A business that checks all four circles but requires 80-hour weeks and no travel is not ikigai. Build the business that funds the life — not the other way around.
Not sure which business hits all four circles for you? That's what the Mirror Method is for — a guided conversation that reflects back what you already know. It's free and it takes about 15 minutes. Start here.
